The holiday season sees a lot of people online shopping for gifts.  It also sees a lot of grinches online looking to gift themselves your banking and personal data.  At WIXY1260Online we believe the right way to use the internet is tuning us in and browsing our website, however there are billions of dollars stolen each year.  In the 2023 holiday season alone, thieves walked off with over $10 Billion (not a misprint) of our hard earned dollars! Stay Vigilant The best way to avoid scams is to always be one step ahead.  If something seems suspicious, unexpected, or too good to be true, it's probably a scam.   We've compiled some tips to protect yourselves during the holidays and all year round while out surfing the choppy waters of the internet. Fake Communication Scams -Be suspicious of emails or texts claiming to be from your boss, colleagues, law enforcement, or family requesting money, gift cards, or bitcoin. -No legitimate business or government agency will ask you to buy or pay with gift cards or bitcoin.  Also, law enforcement will not demand payments over the internet in exchange for dropping fines, warrants or arrest threats. -Verify any urgent requests by calling the person directly using a known phone number. -Check email addresses carefully for subtle differences from legitimate contacts. -Never click links in unexpected delivery, travel confirmation or itinerary change emails. Social Media Risks -Avoid posting detailed travel plans publicly.  You don’t need any visits from the Home Alone burglars! -Criminals monitor social media to identify when homes are unoccupied. -Be cautious of messages from "old friends", or 'endangered' relatives urgently requesting financial help. -Don't accept unexpected friend requests or click on links in unfamiliar posts or comments.
